Let me tell you the story behind this song’s choice :
I have been a big fan of Bobby McFerrin for years. The albums “Bang! Zoom” and “Beyond Words” are probably my favorites out of his discography. Unfortunately, I still haven’t managed to see Bobby performing live even though I have tried many times !
– The first time was in 2009. I had bought tickets for a concert in Paris, and haven’t been able to get there for health reasons. I sold the tickets the day before the show on the internet. The person who bought me those tickets described it to me as one of the best show she had ever seen.
– The second time was in 2012. I had tickets to see him at the festival “Jazz des Cinq Continents” (Marseille, France). He was performing with “Yellow Jackets” as a guest. My car broke down the day of the show and I ended up giving the tickets to a friend (by email) who was already there. As a compensation, I was able to watch the show on youtube a year later…
– The third time was in 2017. I had bought tickets for a show in Lyon (France). The show was due a few days after my sister’s birthday. It was perfect for a gift! Once again, I was out of luck, the whole tour was cancelled because of Bobby’s health issues…
Few months ago, I was transcribing Jeff Berlin’s version of “Tears in Heaven” (from the album “Taking Note” released in 1997) and I had the idea to apply his concept to another song.
As a tribute to Bobby McFerrin, I chose to work “Don’t worry Be Happy” and to play it during my concerts.
I’m not worried but I am still hoping to see him live some day!
This track will appear on the next EP of the Thomas Laffont Group.

Laissez moi vous raconter l’histoire qui se cache derrière le choix de cet arrangement :
Je suis un grand fan de Bobby McFerrin depuis des années. Les albums “Bang! Zoom” et “Beyond Words” sont certainement mes préférés de sa discographie. Malheureusement je n’ai toujours pas réussi à voir Bobby en concert et ce n’est pourtant pas faute d’avoir essayé !
– La première fois c’était en 2009. J’avais acheté des places pour un concert à Paris, et je n’ai pas pu m’y rendre pour des raisons de santé. J’ai revendu les places la veille du concert par internet. La personne qui m’a acheté les places me l’a décrit comme l’un des meilleurs concerts qu’elle ait vu de sa vie !
– La seconde fois, c’était en 2012. J’avais des places pour le voir au festival “Jazz des Cinq Continents” (Marseille). Il était invité par le groupe “Yellow Jackets” ! Je suis tombé en panne de voiture le jour du concert et j’ai donné ma place à une amie (par email) qui était sur place. En lot de consolation, j’ai pu regarder le concert sur youtube un an plus tard…
– La troisième fois (jamais deux sans trois comme on dit), c’était en 2017. J’avais acheté des places pour un concert à Lyon. La date du concert tombait quelques jours après l’anniversaire de ma soeur. C’était la date idéale pour lui faire un beau cadeau ! Encore une fois, pas de chance, toute la tournée a été annulé pour des raisons de santé de Bobby…
Il y a quelques temps, je travaillais la version de “Tears In Heaven” de Jeff Berlin (sur son album “Taking Note” sorti en 1997) et j’ai eu l’idée d’appliquer son concept sur une autre chanson.
C’est en hommage à Bobby McFerrin que j’ai choisi d’arranger Don’t Worry Be Happy et de le jouer pendant mes concerts.
Je ne m’inquiète pas et j’espère toujours le voir en concert un jour !
